Taxonomy: The Common Mormon (Papilio polytes) is a member of the Lepidoptera order and the Papilionidae family. While widely studied for its fascinating sexual mimicry, it is also recognized as an agricultural pest that feeds on the foliage of several economically important plant species.
Host Plants: The larvae of the Common Mormon are specialist feeders on plants within the Rutaceae family. The primary targets of their feeding are citrus crops, including lemons, limes, oranges, and pomelos. They tend to concentrate their feeding on young, tender leaves, which makes them particularly destructive in nurseries and young plantations.
Biology and Life Cycle: The life cycle progresses through four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs singly on the undersides of host leaves. The larvae undergo five instars, consuming significant amounts of plant matter at each stage. The pupal stage occurs on the host plant, with the pupa perfectly camouflaged to mimic a twig or leaf structure.

Early instars skeletonize the leaves, while later instars consume entire leaf blades, leaving only the primary veins. Severe infestations lead to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, and a significant decrease in fruit production, which compromises the overall health of the tree.
Control Measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for managing populations of this butterfly. Key strategies include:
