Schmeltz's Swallowtail (Papilio schmeltzi) is a distinctive species of butterfly belonging to the Papilionidae family, endemic to the Fiji Islands. While it is related to other swallowtails known for their impact on citrus plantations, this particular species has a restricted distribution, categorizing it as a pest of limited agricultural significance.

Taxonomically, it falls within the order Lepidoptera, family Papilionidae. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The developmental rate is strictly dictated by the tropical climate of its native habitat, where high humidity and stable temperatures support continuous reproduction cycles throughout the year.

The larvae of Papilio schmeltzi primarily feed on the foliage of various Rutaceae plants. During the larval stages, the caterpillars consume leaf tissue aggressively, which can lead to significant localized defoliation.
