Anise swallowtail

The Anise swallowtail (Papilio zelicaon) is a butterfly species belonging to the Papilionidae family. While these butterflies are widely recognized for their aesthetic value, their larvae are recognized as pests that feed on foliage, often affecting various cultivated plants in home gardens and commercial fields.

The primary hosts of this species are plants in the Apiaceae (umbelliferous) family. The caterpillars commonly feed on dill, parsley, fennel, carrots, celery, and parsnips. By consuming the leaves of these economically important crops, the larvae can cause substantial aesthetic and physiological damage to the host plants.

The life cycle of Papilio zelicaon follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The adult female lays eggs on the host plant foliage. Once hatched, the caterpillars grow rapidly, undergoing several molts. They are distinct due to their color patterns and the osmeterium, a defensive organ they extend when threatened.

The damage is caused primarily by the larval stage. Caterpillars chew through the leaves, which reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize. In cases of high infestation, they can defoliate plants, significantly impacting the yield of leafy greens or the development of root vegetables. This damage is particularly critical during the early growth stages.
