Description

Paradiplosis is a genus of gall midges within the family Cecidomyiidae (order Diptera). These insects are specialized phytophages known for infesting coniferous trees, particularly species of fir (Abies). In forestry and ornamental horticulture, they are recognized as significant pests that induce needle deformation through the formation of galls.

The biology of Paradiplosis is highly synchronized with the phenological cycles of the host plant. Adult midges are small, delicate flies that emerge in the spring. They deposit eggs near developing buds or on the surfaces of young needles. The larvae, upon hatching, initiate feeding on the plant tissue, which triggers the formation of a gall, protecting them from environmental threats.

The characteristic damage is the presence of galls, which are pathological outgrowths of leaf tissue. Infested needles often appear stunted, curled, or discolored. In cases of high population density, the cumulative effect of these galls can weaken the tree's health, retard growth, and significantly reduce the aesthetic value of ornamental conifers.

The life cycle is typically univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Larvae generally overwinter inside the galls or within the forest litter beneath the host tree. During spring, they pupate and emerge as adults just as new foliage begins to develop. This tight timing is critical for the survival of the larvae, as they require succulent, actively growing tissues for initial development.

Management of Paradiplosis involves a combination of cultural and chemical control measures. Sanitation practices, such as the removal and disposal of infested fallen needles, are essential to reduce the overwintering population. In nursery settings, systemic insecticides applied during the peak emergence of adults—before galls are fully formed—can provide effective suppression of the infestation.
