Description

The Fir needle gall midge (Paradiplosis abietispectinatae) is a member of the Diptera order and the Cecidomyiidae family. This species is a specialized forest pest that primarily affects members of the genus Abies, causing distinctive damage to the foliage.

The primary host for this insect is the European silver fir (Abies alba). The pest shows a strong preference for the current year's needles, which makes young, actively growing trees particularly susceptible to heavy infestation during the spring season.

The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Adults emerge in the spring, coinciding with the bud burst of the host tree. The female midge lays eggs on the developing needles. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the needle tissue, which triggers the tree's physiological response to create a protective gall.

The damage is characterized by the formation of small, yellowish-green swellings on the undersides of the needles. These galls provide nourishment and shelter for the developing larvae. Eventually, the infested needles turn yellow, exhibit stunted growth, and drop prematurely, leading to significant foliage loss and reduced tree vitality.

Management of the fir needle gall midge requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. In large forests, managing host tree density is essential. For nurseries and landscape settings, systemic insecticides applied during the peak emergence of adults can effectively break the life cycle. Proper sanitation, involving the removal and destruction of heavily infested foliage, is also recommended to reduce local population pressure.
