This organism is recognized as a plant-parasitic nematode that interacts with the root systems of various host plants. Unlike some endoparasites, its feeding behavior and localized impact can cause significant stress to the host plants it inhabits.

The host range of this nematode includes a wide variety of herbaceous plants, including vegetables and ornamental species. It is particularly problematic in systems with high soil moisture and warm temperatures. The nematode utilizes the rhizospheric zone to locate its host roots, eventually penetrating the epidermal layers to extract nutrients directly from the root cells.

The life cycle of Paraphelenchus amblyurus involves multiple developmental stages, starting from eggs deposited in the soil or root vicinity, followed by mobile larval stages. These larvae are highly adapted to seek out root exudates. Once a suitable host is found, the nematode uses its stylet to pierce the cell walls, causing localized physiological damage and draining the plant’s energy reserves.

The damage caused by the nematode creates pathways for opportunistic soil fungi and bacteria to enter the root system, which can lead to rapid root decay.
