Olive mealybug

The olive mealybug (Paraputo olivaceus) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Pseudococcidae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect is primarily recognized for its negative impact on olive cultivation, where it causes substantial physiological stress to trees by feeding on plant phloem sap using specialized mouthparts.

This species primarily infests olive trees (Olea europaea) and can occasionally be found on various evergreen ornamental or fruit-bearing trees. The insect thrives in warm, temperate climates, where it can complete multiple generations during the growing season. Infestations are easily identified by the presence of white, cotton-like wax filaments covering the insect colonies on twigs and leaves.

The biology of Paraputo olivaceus involves several life stages: eggs, nymphal instars, and adults. Female mealybugs are sedentary, remaining attached to the host plant, while early-stage nymphs, commonly referred to as "crawlers," are mobile. These crawlers play a critical role in the infestation spread, as they can be dispersed by wind, water, or mechanical contact between branches.

The pest's harmfulness is dual-fold. First, direct sap removal leads to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and potential branch dieback. Second, the mealybug secretes copious amounts of honeydew, which serves as a medium for sooty mold growth. This fungal layer blocks sunlight, severely hindering photosynthesis and reducing the overall productivity and market quality of the harvested fruit.
