Paraputo theaecola, commonly referred to as the tea mealybug, is an insect pest belonging to the family Pseudococcidae within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant pest of tea plants (Camellia sinensis), often causing economic losses in tea-growing regions by damaging the tender growth of the plants.
The primary host for this species is the tea plant, where it resides in sheltered areas such as leaf axils, terminal buds, and under the bark of young shoots. By choosing these protected sites, the insect creates a microhabitat that shields it from environmental extremes and makes direct contact with pesticides more challenging.
The biology of Paraputo theaecola involves distinct developmental stages, including eggs, several nymphal instars, and adults. The female adult is covered in a characteristic white waxy secretion, providing protection. Reproduction is high, and the dispersal of the crawlers (first-instar nymphs) allows the infestation to spread rapidly across fields, especially under favorable warm and humid conditions.
The damage caused by the tea mealybug is dual-faceted. Firstly, the insects suck plant sap, leading to stunted growth, leaf deformation, and reduced leaf quality.
