The Speckled wood (Pararge aegeria) is a butterfly belonging to the Nymphalidae family, specifically the Satyrinae subfamily. While primarily recognized as a woodland species, it is occasionally noted as a minor pest in agronomy and horticulture when its larvae feed on grasses, which can affect the quality of ornamental turf or specific forage crops.

The larvae feed on various grass species, including Poa (meadow-grass) and Elymus (couch grass). They are rarely considered a major agricultural threat to large-scale cereal crops; however, their presence in dense ornamental plantings or seed nurseries can cause enough foliage damage to warrant attention from land managers and gardeners.

The biology of Pararge aegeria is characterized by a flexible development cycle, with two or more generations appearing throughout the season depending on environmental temperatures. They overwinter either as larvae or pupae, hiding within the thatch layer or protected areas of host plants, which allows them to emerge early in the spring.

The damage caused by the larvae involves irregular feeding patterns along the leaf margins, often referred to as "notching." This feeding behavior results in reduced leaf surface area, which can stress young or delicate grass plants. While the impact is generally aesthetic, severe infestations in specific environments may lead to localized turf decline.

Management strategies focus on cultural controls to disrupt the life cycle. Key methods include the removal of dead plant debris where larvae pupate, regular mowing of grass to prevent high-density colonization, and the promotion of competitive plant growth to mask any feeding symptoms.
