Description
The Parastichtis genus includes several species of moths belonging to the Noctuidae family. These insects are widely distributed in temperate regions and are recognized for their night-active behavior. As adult moths, they are primarily nectar feeders, but in their larval stage, they act as leaf-consuming pests.
These moths typically target various broad-leaved trees and shrubs. Their primary hosts often include poplar, willow, and birch trees. However, when these moths are present in high densities, they can migrate to neighboring horticultural crops, causing localized but significant defoliation and stress to the plants.
The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid on twigs or bark where they overwinter. In the spring, larvae emerge synchronously with the bud burst of their host plants. This feeding behavior reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the trees and can lead to a decline in plant vigor over several seasons.
