Paratephritis is a genus of fruit flies belonging to the family Tephritidae. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various botanical contexts, primarily due to their larvae feeding within the flower heads and seed-bearing tissues of host plants, leading to substantial damage to reproductive structures.

Taxonomically, the genus is classified within the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. These flies are characterized by distinctive wing patterns and are often referred to as "picture-winged flies." They have evolved to exploit specific plant niches, ensuring the survival of their offspring during critical developmental stages.

Host plants typically include species within the Asteraceae family. The larvae are hidden feeders, making detection difficult until significant damage has occurred.
