Description
Parathona belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. These insects are recognized as significant pests that cause considerable damage to agricultural plantings during their larval stage by consuming plant tissues and disrupting normal vegetative growth.
This pest primarily targets cereal crops and certain industrial plants. The larvae exhibit a cryptic lifestyle, which makes the early detection of infestation hotspots within the field extremely difficult for agronomists.
The life cycle of Parathona follows the standard pattern for many crambid moths, consisting of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on leaves or stems, and upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding, either skeletonizing foliage or boring into the stems.
Damage is characterized by extensive feeding on leaf tissue and reproductive organs, which significantly reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity and leads to substantial yield losses. In cases of high infestation density, complete defoliation and the death of entire plant segments can occur.
