Patanga

Patanga (lat. Patanga) is a genus of orthopteran insects belonging to the family Acrididae (short-horned grasshoppers). The most prominent and economically significant species is Patanga succincta, commonly known as the Bombay locust or yellow-spotted locust. This pest is classified as a highly dangerous polyphagous insect capable of massive outbreaks and swarm formation, causing severe devastation to agricultural production.

This pest targets a wide variety of agricultural crops. The most susceptible plants include rice, maize, millet, sugarcane, and various wild grasses. During population explosions, these insects can completely defoliate fields, leaving nothing but bare stalks, which poses a significant threat to regional food security.

The biology of Patanga follows a complex life cycle, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females deposit egg pods into the soil, preferring areas with specific moisture levels and soil density. After hatching, nymphs undergo several developmental instars, feeding voraciously on plant foliage. Environmental factors such as temperature and the availability of food sources are critical in determining the speed of population growth.

Damage caused by Patanga is characterized by heavy defoliation, often consuming leaves down to the midrib, as well as feeding on the generative parts of plants. The economic damage stems not only from direct biomass destruction but also from the physiological stress imposed on the crops, which leads to substantial reductions in yield and degradation of grain and produce quality.

Control and protection strategies require an integrated approach. The most critical measures include:

• Systematic monitoring of egg-laying sites to identify potential outbreaks early.
• Use of chemical insecticides to control nymph bands before they reach the adult stage.
• Deep tillage of infested soils to destroy egg pods and reduce the next generation's survival rate.
• Implementation of proper crop rotation to limit the continuous availability of food sources.
