Yellow-horned patanga

The Yellow-horned patanga (Patanga luteicornis) is a prominent species within the Acrididae family, belonging to the order Orthoptera. This locust species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in Southeast Asia, where it frequently infests large-scale cropping areas.

This pest is highly polyphagous, targeting a wide range of host plants including rice, maize, sugarcane, and bamboo. The voracious feeding habits of both nymphs and adults contribute to severe damage in the canopy of these crops, leading to significant yield losses if not managed effectively during early infestation stages.

The biological cycle of Patanga luteicornis is heavily influenced by environmental conditions such as soil moisture and ambient temperature. The life cycle progresses through eggs deposited in the soil, followed by several nymphal instars, and finally the adult stage. Warm and humid climates provide ideal conditions for rapid population growth and multiple generations per year.

The primary damage is caused by the consumption of leaf blades and stems. A heavy infestation can lead to total defoliation, leaving only the primary stalks of the plants intact. This loss of photosynthetic area severely stunts plant growth, reduces grain filling, and increases the vulnerability of the crop to secondary infections and environmental stressors.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to mitigate damage:

• Regular field monitoring to detect early-stage nymphs.
• Application of chemical insecticides when population densities reach threshold levels.
• Cultural practices such as removing wild host plants in surrounding areas to destroy habitats.
