Common limpet

The common limpet (Patella vulgata) is a marine gastropod mollusk belonging to the order Patellogastropoda and the family Patellidae. While naturally occurring in littoral zones, this species is considered a significant pest in the aquaculture sector, where it poses a constant threat to cultivated seaweed and algae crops.

The primary economic damage is caused by the mollusk grazing on cultivated macroalgae such as kelp and laver. By aggressively consuming the plant biomass, common limpets significantly reduce the yield of marine farms. Additionally, they damage farm infrastructure by scraping off bio-protective layers, which can compromise the structural integrity and efficiency of underwater farming systems.

The biology of the species is defined by its resilience and specialized feeding mechanism. Limpets possess a hard conical shell and a strong muscular foot for adhesion. They feed using a radula—a tongue-like organ covered in chitinous teeth that rasps away plant tissues. The life cycle involves a planktonic larval stage, followed by settlement on solid substrates where they grow and reproduce throughout the year.

The damage profile is characterized by distinct scraped patches on the leaves and stalks of the plants. Due to their ability to cluster in high densities, common limpets can strip large sections of cultivated areas within a short timeframe. This grazing activity leads to a severe loss in total production volume and affects the overall quality of the harvest in industrial marine settings.

Control strategies for managing limpet populations in aquaculture include:
