Pauropus huxleyi is a minute arthropod belonging to the class Pauropoda and the family Pauropodidae. Often overlooked due to their size (usually under 2 mm), these organisms are part of the soil mesofauna within the order Tetramerocerata. They are primarily found in moist, organic-rich environments such as greenhouse soils and forest leaf litter.

In an agricultural setting, these pests are known to damage the subterranean parts of various plants. They are particularly harmful to seedlings, young vegetable crops, and nursery stock. When the organic matter in the soil is depleted, they shift their feeding habits towards the soft, tender root tissues and the root collars of growing plants, causing localized damage.

The biology of Pauropus huxleyi is strictly dependent on environmental moisture. They undergo an anamorphic development process, gaining segments and legs as they molt. Because they are highly sensitive to desiccation, they remain buried within the soil profile, making them difficult to detect until significant plant damage becomes visible in the greenhouse or nursery.

The damage caused by these pauropods manifests as small, necrotic lesions on the root system. This grazing activity hampers nutrient and water uptake, but the more critical issue is that these wounds serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, including various soil-borne fungi. This significantly reduces plant vigor and can lead to widespread damping-off in seedling trays.

Effective management and control strategies for Pauropus huxleyi focus on sanitation and environmental modification:

• Heat-treating or steaming soil substrates before sowing seeds.
• Maintaining proper drainage to avoid excessive moisture in the root zone.
