Description
Systematic position: Pegohylemyia fugax belongs to the order Diptera and the family Anthomyiidae. This insect is a significant pest that poses a constant threat to onion crops throughout various agricultural regions.
Host plants: The primary hosts of this pest include various species of the genus Allium, such as onions, garlic, and leeks. In some cases, it can also infest other garden vegetables, causing severe economic damage to commercial vegetable production.
Biology and life cycle: The pest typically overwinters in the soil as a pupa. In the spring, adult flies emerge to mate and lay eggs near the base of the host plants. Depending on the climate, the insect can complete two or three generations per year, with the larvae being the most destructive stage.
