Description

Systematic position: The beet leaf miner (Pegomya cunicularia), also known as the mangold fly, belongs to the order Diptera, family Anthomyiidae. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily affects beet crops throughout various temperate climate zones.

Host plants: The pest targets plants from the Amaranthaceae family, most notably sugar beet, fodder beet, and table beet. Wild host plants like common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) serve as secondary hosts where the pest maintains its population between seasons.

Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters as pupae (puparia) in the soil at a depth of several centimeters. Adult flies emerge in spring and begin laying eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, larvae immediately bore into the leaf tissue, feeding on the mesophyll for several weeks before pupating in the soil or occasionally within the leaf.

Damage and economic impact: Larvae create distinct winding galleries or large blotch mines within the leaf blade. Extensive mining prevents proper photosynthesis, which retards plant growth and leads to significant yield losses. In severe infestations, the foliage can shrivel and die, severely impacting the root development of the beets.
