Description
The sugar beet root aphid (Pemphigus betae) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Aphididae family. It specifically targets the root zone of plants, making it a challenging pest to manage because its feeding activity occurs entirely beneath the soil surface.
This pest primarily affects sugar beets, table beets, and mangel-wurzels. In addition to cultivated crops, the root aphid thrives on several wild host plants, particularly within the Chenopodiaceae family, which serve as alternative food sources throughout the growing season.
The life cycle of Pemphigus betae involves host alternation. It spends part of its cycle on poplar trees, where it produces galls on the leaves. As the summer progresses, winged individuals migrate to beet fields, where they establish colonies on the roots and roots' hairs, proliferating in the soil.
The damage caused by these insects is severe. As they feed on plant sap, the taproots become shriveled, and the foliage shows symptoms of water stress, often turning yellow and wilting. This leads to a substantial reduction in both total beet tonnage and overall sugar percentage at harvest.
