Description
Systematic position: Pemphigus borealis, commonly known as the poplar-lettuce aphid, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized insect species that requires different host plants to complete its complex biological cycle.
Host plants: The primary host for this species is the poplar tree (Populus), where it develops in spring. During the summer, it migrates to secondary hosts, particularly plants from the Asteraceae family, with lettuce being a primary target for agricultural damage.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle involves alternating generations. Eggs overwinter in the bark crevices of poplar trees. In the spring, larvae emerge to form galls on the leaves. By mid-summer, winged aphids migrate to the roots of lettuce, where they reproduce parthenogenetically, before returning to poplars in the autumn.
Damage and harmfulness: On poplars, the aphid causes the formation of leaf galls, resulting in foliage distortion. On lettuce, the aphids colonize the root system and extract plant sap. This feeding significantly stunts plant growth, causes yellowing, and leads to severe economic loss in vegetable production.
Control measures: Management strategies include cultural practices such as removing weeds that serve as alternate hosts and maintaining proper crop rotation.
