Description

The lettuce root aphid (Pemphigus bursarius) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pemphigidae. This pest is widely recognized for its unique ability to alternate hosts, moving from trees to herbaceous plants to complete its biological development.

The primary hosts for this aphid are poplar trees (Populus spp.), where the initial stages of its life cycle occur, and various members of the Asteraceae family, with lettuce (Lactuca sativa) being the most economically significant host for the root-feeding phase.

The life cycle involves an alternation of generations. Eggs overwinter in the bark crevices of poplars. In spring, stem mothers emerge and induce the formation of characteristic purse-shaped galls on the leaf petioles. By summer, winged aphids migrate to the roots of lettuce plants, where they reproduce rapidly.

The damage caused by Pemphigus bursarius is particularly severe in vegetable production. While the galls on poplars are mostly aesthetic, the infestation on lettuce roots drastically inhibits plant growth, reduces crop quality, and often leads to the wilting and total death of the crop.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for control:

  • Maintain significant spatial distance between poplar windbreaks and lettuce fields.
  • Apply targeted soil-applied insecticides if infestation levels are high.
  • Use certified healthy seeds and maintain good soil hygiene.
  • Practice thorough weed control to eliminate secondary host plants near fields.
