Description
Taxonomic position. The Poplar gall aphid, Pemphigus immunis, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized insect known for its ability to manipulate plant growth to create protective structures known as galls, which facilitate its feeding and reproduction.
Host plants and damage symptoms. The primary host plants for this aphid are species within the genus Populus (poplar trees). The presence of the pest is indicated by the formation of characteristic galls on the leaves. These structures serve as shelters for the aphid colonies; as the aphids feed on the plant sap within these galls, the leaf tissue becomes distorted, and severe infestations can lead to premature leaf drop.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Pemphigus immunis is complex, often involving specific seasonal adaptations to the host tree's phenology. The aphids spend a significant portion of their development protected inside the galls, which shield them from environmental stressors and many predators.
