Systematic position: The poplar twig gall aphid (Pemphigus populiramulorum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialist aphid species known for its unique ability to induce gall formation on specific tree hosts.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest are poplar species, particularly the cottonwood (Populus deltoides). During its complex life cycle, the aphid also utilizes secondary herbaceous hosts, specifically colonizing the roots of these plants during the summer months.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle involves alternating generations between woody and herbaceous hosts. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage within bark crevices. In the spring, stem mothers emerge and feed on developing buds or petioles, releasing chemicals that induce the tree to form protective galls where the colony develops.
