Description
Systematic position: Pemphigus populitransversus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a well-known species characterized by a complex life cycle that involves a host alternation between trees and herbaceous plants.
Host plants: The primary hosts are poplar trees (Populus species), where the aphids create galls on the leaf petioles. The secondary hosts are plants within the Brassicaceae family, including various vegetables like cabbage, radish, and turnip, which the aphid colonizes on their root systems.
Biology and life cycle: The species exhibits an obligate migration pattern. Spring generations develop within galls on poplar leaves. As summer approaches, winged migrants disperse to the roots of cruciferous crops. Throughout the summer, they reproduce parthenogenetically on the roots. In autumn, sexual forms return to the poplar trees to deposit overwintering eggs.
Damage and economic impact: While gall formation on poplar leaves is more of an aesthetic issue, the root-feeding behavior on vegetable crops is economically significant. Infested plants show signs of stunting, wilting, and chlorosis. The depletion of nutrients from the root system leads to reduced yields and poor quality of the harvested produce, sometimes resulting in total crop loss.
