Description
Systematic position of the pest places it within the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized species known for its complex heteroecious life cycle, which involves alternating between distinct botanical hosts.
Host plants include primary hosts, such as various species of poplar (Populus), where the pest induces gall formation. During the summer, the aphid migrates to its secondary hosts, which are primarily herbaceous plants in the Asteraceae family, most notably lettuce (Lactuca) and related wild species.
Biology and life cycle are characterized by an alternation of generations. The aphid overwinters as eggs on poplar bark. In spring, larvae settle on young leaves, inducing the formation of characteristic spiral galls. Inside these structures, the aphid reproduces, eventually producing winged migrants that fly to the roots of lettuce plants, where they continue to colonize and feed throughout the summer season.
Damage and harmfulness are observed through the development of twisted, spiral-shaped galls on poplar leaves, which can reduce the vigor of the trees. On lettuce crops, the damage is more critical as the aphids aggregate on the roots, depriving the plant of nutrients and water, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and potential loss of the marketable vegetable crop.
Protection measures require an integrated approach to manage the population. Cultural practices include removing susceptible weeds around fields and maintaining distance between poplar windbreaks and lettuce crops. Chemical control is difficult due to the subterranean nature of the pest; therefore, the application of systemic insecticides via soil drenching or seed treatment is often recommended during the active growing season.
