Poplar bladder aphid

Systematic position. The poplar bladder aphid (Pemphigus vesicarius) is classified within the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized species that induces the formation of galls, which serve as both a food source and a protective environment for its sedentary generations.

Host plants and damage. This species primarily infests poplar trees, particularly black poplar. The economic and aesthetic damage is caused by the formation of large, conspicuous galls on the leaf petioles. Heavy infestations can lead to premature defoliation, general tree decline, and a significant reduction in the ornamental value of urban tree plantations.

Biology and life cycle. The aphid has a complex life cycle involving a migration between primary and secondary host plants. A fundatrix (founder aphid) emerges from an overwintering egg in the spring and begins feeding on a young leaf. This feeding activity stimulates the host plant to produce a gall. Inside this enclosed environment, the aphid undergoes several generations of development, protected from predators and weather conditions.

Nature of damage. The damage manifests as bladder-like growths or galls, usually located at the base of the leaf blade or on the petiole. These galls provide a stable environment for the aphid colony. By late summer, the galls typically split open, allowing the winged migrants to emerge and disperse to their secondary host plants, leaving the damaged leaves to turn brown or wither.

Control measures. Controlling this pest is challenging due to the protection provided by the gall walls. Effective management strategies include:

• Sanitary pruning and removal of infested shoots before the winged aphids emerge.
• Application of systemic insecticides during the early spring before the galls have fully formed.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to minimize the impact of infestation.
