Description
Systematic position. The poplar leaf aphid (Pemphigus vulgaris) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized gall-forming aphid that exhibits a complex life cycle involving an alternation between different plant hosts throughout the year.
Host plants and damage. The primary host for this pest is the poplar tree (genus Populus), specifically the black poplar. During the summer, the aphid undergoes host alternation, moving to the root systems of secondary herbaceous hosts, primarily within the Asteraceae family, where it continues to feed and reproduce.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins in spring when fundatrices (stem mothers) hatch from overwintered eggs on the bark of poplar trees. As they feed on the developing leaves, they induce the formation of specialized structures known as galls. These galls provide a protected environment for the colony to develop and proliferate before winged individuals migrate to secondary hosts.
Character of damage. The most recognizable signs of infestation are the galls formed on the leaves. These structures significantly impede the plant's photosynthetic capacity. Heavy infestations lead to severe leaf distortion, early senescence, and defoliation, which places the tree under significant physiological stress and increases susceptibility to opportunistic diseases.
Control measures. Managing Pemphigus vulgaris is challenging due to the protection afforded by the galls. Effective control relies on:
- Sanitary pruning of infested twigs before the aphids emerge from the galls.
- Application of systemic insecticides during the early spring bud-burst stage.
- Maintaining healthy tree vigor to help the host withstand minor aphid populations.
