This pest is named after the Yunnan province in China, where it was first studied in detail. It is known for its complex interaction with host plants, specifically focusing on the induction of galls for shelter and nourishment.

The primary host plants for this species are members of the Pistacia genus. The aphid requires these trees to initiate its life cycle. By feeding on the internal tissues of the plant, the aphid triggers a chemical response in the host, resulting in the development of specialized growth structures known as galls, which serve as the primary habitat for the colony.

The biological cycle of Pemphigus yunnanensis involves a sophisticated alternation of generations and host migration. After overwintering as eggs, the stem mothers emerge in the spring to colonize young buds and leaves. As they feed, the gall forms around them. Throughout the season, multiple generations develop within these protective structures before winged adults migrate to secondary host plants to continue the cycle.
