Description

Pentatrichopus is a genus of aphids within the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. These insects are well-known agricultural pests that primarily target small fruit crops, with strawberries being the most significant host plant affected by these aphids.

The pest primarily infests strawberry plants, feeding on the undersides of leaves, petioles, and flower stalks. By extracting vital plant sap, the aphids cause severe physiological stress to the host, resulting in stunted growth, reduced fruit production, and diminished overall plant vigor during the growing season.

The life cycle of Pentatrichopus is highly efficient, characterized by rapid reproduction through parthenogenesis. During the spring and summer, populations can explode in a short time. They typically overwinter as eggs on plant tissues or as dormant individuals in sheltered locations, allowing them to restart infestations as soon as temperatures rise in the spring.

Key strategies include the use of virus-free certified stock, regular field scouting, and the implementation of cultural practices like proper spacing and weed control. When economic thresholds are exceeded, targeted applications of systemic or contact insecticides are necessary, always keeping pre-harvest intervals in mind.
