The Red-legged earth mite (Penthaleus major) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Eupodidae family within the Trombidiformes order. It is widely recognized for its potential to cause severe economic damage to pastures, cereals, and various horticultural crops across different climatic zones.

This mite attacks a broad host range, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to small grains, it often infests legumes, vegetables, and many weed species. The presence of these weeds within or around the field edges often serves as a primary infestation source for nearby crop seedlings.

The biology of Penthaleus major is highly adapted to cool and moist environments. It remains active during the cooler months, while extreme summer temperatures induce a state of diapause. During this period, the mites survive through drought-resistant eggs deposited in the soil surface, ensuring the persistence of the population for the next growing season.

The damage caused by these mites is primarily due to their feeding habit of piercing plant cells and sucking out the contents. Symptoms appear as silvery or white spotting on leaves, which leads to necrosis and stunted plant growth. Severe infestations can cause total loss of young seedlings, significantly affecting the crop stand density and final yield.
