Description
The genus Perapion, formerly part of the broad Apion group, belongs to the family Brentidae within the order Coleoptera. These small weevils are significant agricultural pests that specifically target the reproductive structures of legume crops, causing substantial losses in seed production.
Primary host plants for Perapion include clover, alfalfa, and other leguminous forage crops. Their presence is particularly detrimental in fields intended for seed harvesting, as the larvae feed exclusively inside the developing seeds, rendering them unviable and reducing market value.
The biological cycle of this pest involves overwintering as adults in soil or plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the weevils emerge and move toward host plants. They undergo a period of maturation feeding on leaves and stems before mating and initiating the oviposition process on the flowering buds of the legumes.
The primary damage occurs when females drill into the developing pods to deposit eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the internal tissues of the seeds.
