Description

The genus Periphyllus belongs to the Aphididae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects are well-known sap-sucking pests that primarily infest trees of the genus Acer (maples). They are widely distributed and can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage to forest and ornamental trees.

The aphids primarily target the succulent parts of the host plant, including newly emerged leaves, leaf stalks, and terminal shoots. By piercing the plant tissues and extracting phloem sap, they deplete the tree's nutrient reserves, causing growth stunting and general physiological stress.

The biology of Periphyllus is marked by complex polymorphic life cycles. They produce both winged and wingless morphs throughout the season. A unique evolutionary adaptation of certain species in this genus is the production of estivating nymphs, which enter a state of dormancy during the heat of summer to survive environmental stress before resuming activity in autumn.

Visible damage includes leaf curling, chlorosis, and premature senescence. The insects produce large quantities of honeydew, a sugary secretion that serves as a medium for the growth of sooty mold. This black fungal coating covers the foliage, effectively blocking sunlight and interfering with the tree's photosynthetic capability.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Early season monitoring is critical to detect colonies before they reach outbreak levels. In cases of severe infestation, systemic or contact insecticides may be applied. Encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles, lacewings, and syrphid fly larvae, is an effective long-term approach to controlling populations naturally.
