American maple aphid

Systematic position. The American maple aphid (Periphyllus americanus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized insect species that typically inhabits maple trees (genus Acer), exhibiting a distinct preference for specific hosts within its geographical range.

Host plants and damage. This species primarily infests maple trees, including sugar maples. The aphids aggregate on succulent new growth and the undersides of leaves. Their feeding activities extract sap, leading to stunted shoot growth, leaf curling, and overall tree stress, which reduces the aesthetic and health status of the tree.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves both winged and wingless forms, allowing the population to disperse during the growing season. The winter is passed in the egg stage, which the females lay in bark crevices. Upon hatching in spring, the nymphs begin feeding and rapidly undergo multiple generations, which is typical for many species within this genus.

Nature of injury. Beyond the direct damage from feeding, the aphids produce honeydew, a sugary waste product that coats the leaves. This honeydew serves as a perfect growth medium for sooty mold fungi. The accumulation of sooty mold not only makes the tree look unkempt but also hinders photosynthesis, negatively impacting the tree's energy reserves.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to handle this pest. Early season inspection is crucial to identify outbreaks before they escalate. Chemical control, including the application of systemic or contact insecticides, is often necessary in cases of heavy infestation to preserve the health of the host tree.
