Host plants: The pest targets various species of maple trees. It is particularly problematic in nurseries, parks, and residential landscapes where maple cultivars are planted in high density. The aphid colonizes tender tissues, focusing on the undersides of leaves and developing succulent stems of the host tree.

Biology and life cycle: Periphyllus formosanus exhibits a complex life cycle typical of many aphids, involving both sexual and asexual reproduction stages. Eggs survive the winter in bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge, leading to rapid population growth through parthenogenesis, which generates multiple generations during a single growing season.
