Description

The maple hairy aphid (Periphyllus hirticornis) is a member of the Aphididae family within the order Hemiptera. It is a highly specific pest primarily affecting maples, frequently observed in urban landscapes, arboretums, and forest ecosystems.

Host plants for this species are limited to the genus Acer. The aphids aggregate on the undersides of leaves, leaf stalks, and green stems, where they pierce plant tissues to feed on phloem sap. This feeding activity causes localized stress and systemic weakening of the tree's vascular system.

The biological cycle is complex and involves several generations, including both apterous (wingless) and alate (winged) forms. A notable adaptation is the production of aestivating (summer-dormant) nymphs, which allow the species to survive mid-summer heat stress before resuming activity in the autumn.

Damage is characterized by leaf curling, chlorosis, and premature senescence of the foliage. Additionally, the excessive secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers the leaf surface, effectively blocking sunlight and inhibiting photosynthesis.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control this pest. Chemical intervention should be timed with the early stages of infestation. Encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps, plays a vital role in maintaining aphid populations below the economic injury level.
