Koelreuteria aphid

Systematic position. Periphyllus koelreuteriae belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized species that has co-evolved with its host plants, displaying specific physiological adaptations required for successful colonization of its host tree.

Host plants. The primary and sole host for this aphid species is the goldenrain tree, Koelreuteria paniculata. Infestations are primarily observed in urban landscapes, botanical gardens, and nurseries where these ornamental trees are cultivated in large numbers.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Periphyllus koelreuteriae is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. The aphid populations proliferate rapidly through parthenogenesis during the spring and summer. As the season ends, sexual morphs are produced, leading to the deposition of overwintering eggs in bark crevices of young twigs.

Nature of damage and harm. The aphids feed by piercing plant tissue and sucking phloem sap from the leaves, stems, and shoots. This feeding habit causes severe leaf curling, stunted growth, and yellowing. In high-density populations, the trees experience significant physiological stress, which negatively impacts their aesthetic value and overall vigor.

Control measures. Protecting trees from this pest requires a proactive approach based on regular observation and targeted actions:

• Implementation of systemic insecticide sprays early in the season to prevent the buildup of large colonies.
• Encouraging biological control agents, such as lacewings and ladybirds, which naturally predate upon aphid colonies.
• Pruning of severely infested branches during the dormant period to physically remove overwintering eggs.
• Maintaining optimal tree health through proper watering and soil management to increase plant resilience against pest attacks.
