Description
The boxelder aphid (Periphyllus negundinis) is an insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest that primarily infests the boxelder maple (Acer negundo). These insects are commonly found in North America and other regions where this tree species is cultivated for ornamental purposes.
The lifecycle of the boxelder aphid is complex, typically involving both sexual and asexual reproduction phases. Eggs overwinter on the bark of twigs. As spring approaches and temperatures rise, these eggs hatch into stem mothers. Throughout the growing season, multiple generations of wingless and winged adults follow, rapidly colonizing the new leaves and succulent shoots.
The damage caused by these aphids manifests as chlorosis, curling of leaves, and stunted development of twigs. By extracting substantial amounts of phloem sap, the aphids drain the tree's energy reserves. Severe infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, which significantly stresses the tree and diminishes its aesthetic and ecological value in landscapes.
Furthermore, the aphids excrete a sticky substance known as honeydew. This substance often coats the foliage and surrounding surfaces, promoting the growth of sooty mold. This black, powdery fungal layer not only covers the leaves, obstructing light and air exchange, but also makes the plant look unsightly, which is particularly problematic for urban tree management.
