The sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a small arboreal marsupial belonging to the order Diprotodontia and the family Petauridae. While widely recognized as a popular exotic pet, within its natural habitat and under certain conditions, it acts as a persistent agricultural pest that can significantly affect horticultural and forestry productivity.

These animals are known for causing considerable damage to a variety of woody plants. They feed primarily on the nutrient-rich sap of eucalypts, acacias, and various fruit-bearing trees. By targeting the sap, they create wounds in the bark that disrupt the physiological processes of the tree and make it susceptible to environmental stress.

The biology of this species is characterized by nocturnal habits and high agility, which makes them difficult to monitor. They exhibit a prolific reproductive cycle, allowing populations to rebound quickly. Because they are social and opportunistic feeders, they often gather in areas where high-energy food sources, such as sap or ripening fruit, are readily available.

The primary damage symptoms include deep incisions and pits on the bark, stems, and branches. Beyond direct sap loss, these wounds often facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, leading to fungal decay and reduced yields in commercial orchards. The cumulative impact of repeated feeding sessions can lead to the death of individual branches or even entire small trees.

Effective mitigation and protection strategies include:

  • Installation of metal tree guards or cones to prevent the animals from climbing.
  • Use of netting over fruit-bearing trees to exclude the gliders from the harvest.
  • Maintenance of tree spacing to reduce canopy bridges that facilitate their movement.
  • Utilization of ultrasonic deterrent devices to create an unwelcoming environment in the orchard.
