Pezotettix giornae

Systematic position: Pezotettix giornae belongs to the order Orthoptera, family Acrididae (grasshoppers). This insect is a flightless or short-winged grasshopper species that has adapted to specific ecological conditions within the Mediterranean region and adjacent areas.

Crops: This species is a polyphagous pest. It causes significant damage to various agricultural crops, including vegetables, cereals, forage grasses, as well as vineyards and young trees, by feeding on their foliage and soft green tissues.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in the soil in protected areas. Development occurs through incomplete metamorphosis, where nymphs pass through several instars, resembling adults but differing in size and lack of reproductive maturity.

Nature of damage: Both adults and nymphs possess chewing mouthparts. The damage manifests as the intensive consumption of leaf blades, shoots, and young stems. In cases of mass outbreaks, the pest can quickly strip plants of their vegetation, leading to substantial yield losses.

Control measures: Controlling the population involves agrotechnical methods such as deep soil plowing to destroy egg pods, and the application of chemical insecticides (contact or systemic) during the peak period of nymph emergence. Regular field monitoring and the use of bait traps are also highly recommended.
