The grapevine moth (Phalaenoides glycinae) is a significant lepidopteran pest belonging to the Agaristidae family. Native to Australia, this insect has become a notable threat to viticulture due to its specialized feeding habits on grapevines and its ability to reproduce rapidly under favorable climatic conditions.

The primary host plants are species within the Vitaceae family, with cultivated grapes being the most impacted. The larvae are voracious feeders, primarily targeting the foliage. In the absence of management, these insects can colonize large vineyard areas, causing widespread damage within a short period.

The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited on the underside of leaves. Larvae progress through several instars, feeding throughout the night and hiding during the day. Pupation usually occurs in the soil or in crevices of the grapevine bark, which serves as a protective overwintering strategy.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by severe defoliation. Young larvae create small holes in leaves, while older larvae consume the entire leaf lamina, often leaving only the main veins. This extensive foliage loss significantly hinders plant metabolic processes, reduces the quality and quantity of grape yields, and limits the storage of carbohydrates for winter dormancy.

Effective control strategies require integrated pest management (IPM). Growers should prioritize regular scouting to identify early infestations. Biological control, including the application of Bacillus thuringiensis sprays, is highly effective against early instar larvae. Chemical interventions should be targeted and timed to coincide with the most vulnerable developmental stages of the insect.
