The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is a marsupial belonging to the order Diprotodontia and the family Phascolarctidae. While considered a flagship species for conservation, in the context of commercial forestry, particularly eucalyptus plantations, they are sometimes managed as herbivores that impose limitations on forest productivity.

The primary diet of the koala consists exclusively of leaves from various Eucalyptus species. Damage to commercial crops occurs when high populations inhabit plantations, leading to excessive defoliation. This constant grazing significantly impacts the physiological health and growth rates of the trees.

Biologically, koalas are highly specialized folivores. Their life cycle involves a slow reproductive rate, but they occupy specific home ranges where they return to feed repeatedly. This site fidelity can lead to severe stress on specific clusters of trees, hindering the reforestation process in managed plantation areas.

The characteristic damage includes the consumption of tender apical shoots and substantial defoliation, which limits the tree's photosynthetic capacity. Over time, this leads to stunted growth, reduced wood volume, and increased susceptibility to secondary fungal diseases or insect attacks that thrive on weakened trees.

Management strategies focus on non-lethal deterrents due to strict environmental legislation. Forestry professionals implement exclusion fencing around young saplings and utilize specialized collars to prevent climbing. Additionally, spatial planning that minimizes the proximity of primary habitats to commercial timber stands is a standard agronomic practice to mitigate damage.
