Phaulacridium is a genus of short-horned grasshoppers belonging to the family Acrididae. The most notable species, Phaulacridium vittatum, commonly known as the wingless grasshopper, is a significant agricultural pest in parts of Australia. Despite being flightless, these insects are notorious for their ability to reach high population densities and cause widespread destruction in localized areas.

Taxonomically, the genus is categorized under the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. A distinguishing feature of Phaulacridium is its reduced wing structure, which prevents long-distance flight but does not stop them from spreading through crawling or hitchhiking on vehicles. This physiological trait dictates their localized impact on pastures and managed croplands.

The pest poses a threat to a wide range of plants, including cereals, fodder grasses, vegetables, and perennial crops like vineyards. Because they are voracious feeders, their impact is particularly severe in orchards and vegetable gardens, where they can consume tender foliage and young shoots, often leading to total crop failure during high-infestation years.

The life cycle begins with eggs being laid in the soil, where they remain in diapause through the winter. As spring temperatures rise, nymphs emerge and progress through multiple developmental stages. During this time, they exhibit high consumption rates, causing substantial defoliation and mechanical damage to plant structures, effectively reducing both plant vitality and overall yield potential.
