Description
Systematic position. The hawthorn mealybug (Phenacoccus dearnessi) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a significant sap-sucking pest known for causing damage to various deciduous trees and ornamental shrubs in temperate climates.
Host plants. This species primarily infests members of the Rosaceae family. Its host range includes hawthorn (Crataegus), apple (Malus), pear (Pyrus), mountain ash (Sorbus), cotoneaster, and spirea. Heavy infestations are common in managed orchards and landscape plantings.
Biology and life cycle. The pest typically completes one generation per year. It overwinters as second-instar nymphs within bark crevices or protected branch junctions. As temperatures rise in spring, the nymphs emerge to feed on developing buds and young shoots. Adults emerge in early summer, and females produce eggs within characteristic cottony wax ovisacs.
Nature of damage and pest status. By feeding on plant sap, the mealybug causes leaf curling, yellowing, and premature senescence. The constant withdrawal of fluids weakens the host plant, resulting in stunted shoot growth. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which reduces photosynthetic efficiency and lowers the ornamental value of the plants.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial. Effective strategies include physical removal of infested branches and dormant oil applications to smother overwintering nymphs. During the active growth season, systemic insecticides are applied when nymphs are most vulnerable. Promoting natural predators, such as lady beetles, can also assist in long-term population suppression.
