Description
The Ash mealybug (Phenacoccus fraxinus) is a sap-sucking insect belonging to the family Pseudococcidae, order Hemiptera. This pest is a significant threat to ash trees, particularly in urban landscapes and forests, where it feeds on the phloem sap of the host plant.
The primary host for this species is the genus Fraxinus (ash). The insects typically cluster in protected areas such as bark crevices, leaf axils, and around the buds. Their white, waxy secretion often makes them visible, appearing like cottony patches on the stems or trunks of infested trees.
The life cycle of the ash mealybug is characterized by a gradual metamorphosis. They generally overwinter as second-instar nymphs sheltered under the bark. As temperatures rise in the spring, the nymphs emerge, migrate to younger growth, and settle down to feed, eventually developing into adult females which produce eggs in protective ovisacs.
Damage caused by Phenacoccus fraxinus includes stunted shoot growth, leaf yellowing, and general tree decline. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a black, unsightly layer on leaves and bark, negatively impacting the tree's overall physiological performance.
