Bristly mealybug

Taxonomic classification. The bristly mealybug (Phenacoccus hystrix) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a sap-sucking insect characterized by its ability to secrete a white, waxy substance, which covers its body and provides significant protection against external environmental factors.

Host range. This species is a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide variety of plants. Common hosts include citrus trees, ornamental shrubs, various palm species, and numerous tropical fruit crops. In greenhouse environments, Phenacoccus hystrix can infest diverse plant collections, often spreading rapidly if not detected during the early stages of colonization.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Females are sedentary and protected by waxy ovisacs where they lay their eggs. Nymphs, known as crawlers, are highly mobile and facilitate the spread of the infestation to adjacent plants. The population growth is closely linked to warm, humid conditions typical of tropical climates or climate-controlled greenhouses.

Nature of damage and impact. The bristly mealybug feeds on plant phloem sap, which deprives the plant of nutrients and moisture. The immediate results are stunted growth, leaf yellowing, and flower drop. Additionally, they produce honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, blocking photosynthesis and making the produce aesthetically unacceptable for commercial markets.

Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Implementing strict quarantine protocols for imported plant material.
• Utilizing systemic insecticides that penetrate plant tissues.
• Applying biological control agents, such as specific parasitic wasps or ladybird beetles.
• Regular monitoring and mechanical removal of localized infestations.
• Managing humidity levels to reduce the suitability of the environment for the pest.
