Mealybug minimus

Phenacoccus minimus is a plant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. This mealybug species is known for its small size and tendency to cluster in hidden parts of plants, making it a challenging pest to detect before it reaches significant population levels in commercial fields and greenhouses.

The host range of this pest is diverse, affecting various fruit trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. It primarily thrives on young plant tissue, including shoots, leaves, and petiole junctions. Its feeding habits allow it to exploit the plant's vascular system, directly impacting growth and development through the removal of essential plant sap.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larval (crawler), and adult stages. The adult females are sedentary and secrete a protective white waxy substance that shields them from environmental stressors and many types of chemical treatments. The reproduction rate can be high under optimal temperature and humidity conditions, leading to multiple generations per year.

Damage caused by Phenacoccus minimus is characterized by leaf wilting, stunted growth, and premature drop of buds or fruits. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the colonization of sooty mold, which coats the foliage and severely inhibits photosynthesis, leading to reduced yield and poor plant health.
