Description
The multicerate mealybug (Phenacoccus multicerarii) is a member of the Pseudococcidae family, belonging to the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant pest of various ornamental and woody plant species, often causing distress to both nursery stock and established landscape plants.
This pest primarily infests the soft tissues of the host plant, such as stems, leaves, and leaf axils. By piercing the plant cells and feeding on the sap, the mealybug disrupts the flow of nutrients. Constant feeding causes stunting, yellowing, and severe deformities in the plant’s developmental structure.
The biology of Phenacoccus multicerarii involves a complex life cycle characterized by distinct nymphal instars. The adult females are protected by a white, waxy secretion that makes them resistant to many conventional insecticides. Their ability to reproduce rapidly allows them to build up large colonies within a short period.
The most visible sign of infestation is the presence of white, cotton-like masses, especially in protected areas of the plant. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage, significantly reducing the aesthetic quality and photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
