Grape mealybug

Systematic position: Phenacoccus pergandei is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae, commonly known as mealybugs. These small, sap-sucking insects are recognized as major pests in agricultural and horticultural settings, often going undetected until significant population levels are reached.

Host plants: The pest exhibits a wide host range, feeding on various economic crops and ornamental plants. Primary hosts include grapevines, citrus trees, persimmons, and figs. Its ability to colonize different plant species allows it to survive in diverse agro-ecosystems and urban landscapes year-round.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle typically involves overwintering as nymphs or unmated females within protective niches such as bark crevices, pruning wounds, or near the soil surface. As temperatures rise in spring, the females move to fresh plant growth. They produce multiple generations per season, and the females secrete a characteristic white, waxy, cottony substance to protect their egg masses.

Damage symptoms and harmfulness: Feeding damage manifests as chlorosis, stunted shoot growth, and reduced vigor of the host plant. The excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces fruit quality. Severe infestations can lead to total crop loss, premature leaf drop, and increased susceptibility of the plant to secondary pathogens and abiotic stresses.

• Removal of loose bark and dead wood to reduce overwintering sites.
