Peruvian mealybug

Phenacoccus peruvianus

Description

Systematic position: The Peruvian mealybug (Phenacoccus peruvianus) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Pseudococcidae family. It is recognized as an invasive pest, posing significant challenges for greenhouse nurseries and indoor ornamental plant collections worldwide.

Host plants: This pest is polyphagous and infests a wide range of woody plants and succulents. Common hosts include species such as Fuchsia, Pelargonium, Bougainvillea, and various ornamental succulents. Its ability to thrive in controlled environments makes it a persistent threat to commercial plant trade.

Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle consists of egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. Females produce a white waxy secretion that covers their bodies, providing protection against environmental stress and some insecticides. The pest thrives in warm, humid conditions, which facilitate rapid population growth and continuous generations throughout the year in indoor settings.

Damage and impact: Mealybugs feed by piercing plant tissues and sucking out sap. This feeding process drains nutrients, causing stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and curling. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and impairs photosynthesis, significantly reducing the aesthetic value and vitality of the infested plant.

  • Strict quarantine protocols for all new plant acquisitions.
  • Physical removal and sanitation of heavily infested plant parts.
  • Application of systemic insecticides, specifically neonicotinoids or insect growth regulators.
  • Release of biological control agents, such as the ladybird beetle Cryptolaemus montrouzieri.
  • Regular monitoring and adjustment of greenhouse humidity levels to discourage reproduction.
