Description

Systematic position: The poplar bark aphid (Phloeomyzus passerinii) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is a highly specialized species that exclusively targets the bark of poplar trees, living in protected areas within crevices.

Affected crops: This pest primarily infests various species and clones of the genus Populus, including black poplar and hybrids. It is particularly problematic in dense forestry plantings and urban avenues, where trees are already subjected to environmental stressors.

Biology and lifecycle: The species exhibits a monoecious lifecycle, meaning it completes its entire development on a single host plant species. They overwinter as nymphs or wingless females tucked deep within bark fissures. As temperatures rise in spring, they reproduce rapidly, forming dense colonies hidden from predators under the layers of bark.

Nature of damage and pest significance: The aphids feed by inserting their stylets into the bark tissues to extract sap. This activity leads to significant bark necrosis, the development of deep fissures, and tissue dehydration. Severe infestations often result in reduced tree vigor, crown dieback, and increased susceptibility to wood-boring insects and pathogenic fungi.
